Stories From Nick’s: Bob Inman

I grew up in Bronxville, New York, and visited Nick's Tavern many times from l937 to l939, at age 17-19. Some of the jazzmen my high school friends and I saw were Eddie Condon, Bobby Hackett, George Brunies, C. Newcomb, Dave Bowman, Pee Wee Russell, and Dave Tough.

We talked to all of the musicians. I remember Condon giving Pee Wee Russell a hard time at the bar. We usually had a table next to the band and paid less than a dollar for our drinks. Please refer to the book, Swing Era Scrapbook Teen-Age Diaries Of Bob Inman, 1936 to 1938, which has 13 different references to Nick's.

I finally received your superb CD about my book and the great music. I can't forget the actor who portrayed me so well. Thanks so very very much for your Riverwalk CD. I am 87 years of age and cannot do much but listen to my 100s of jazz tapes. Keep up your interesting emails. I forgot to mention that I saw Nicholas Payton when he was 17 years of age on a SS Norway jazz cruise.

Thanks again for all your jazz interest.

Sincerely, Bob Inman
